Last week was pretty intense with quizzes. On Friday there will be a Navi quiz and a small quiz in Mishna. A Mishna packet will also be due on Friday.
In Navi we are up to chapter 24. David is on the run from Shaul and David must show courage in the face of danger and restraint when he has the chance to kill Shaul.
In Mishna we are continuing our introduction to gemara. We are studying the generations of the Amoraim, the sources of Torah Sh'ba'al Peh, the structure of a page of gemara and the Talmud's style of debate. We are also making flash cards of basic gemara vocabulary to give us a head start for next year. The students are having fun making their video introductions to Talmud.
In Dinim last week we learned about the laws of respecting and standing for your elders and the wise. It was fun learning these halakhot on grandpeople's day. Every time a grandperson walked in the students were able to stand up and do the mitzvah they were learning about. We also studied the significance of the death of Rabbi Akiva's students during the period between Pesach and Shavuot. This week we will be learning the laws of borer.

Welcome
First of all, welcome to the 6th Grade Limudei Kodesh blog. I will use this blog to keep you updated on what's happening in the classroom each week. Whenever I make a new post I will send you an email, so no need to check in every day.
This week we began our introduction to Talmud. We started by watching some of the animated videos at: www.animatedtalmud.com. This was a fun way of learning some of the basics that will be needed to learn Talmud next year. Then we made our way into the Bonayich workbook to consolidate what we learned. This is all preparatory work for our last project which will be their own version of the animated Talmud. You can look forward to getting a link to the last videos covering the mishnayot related to Pesach in your email as soon as Sam L. and I hammer out some of the technical difficulties--stay tuned. There is a link on the sidebar of this blog to the 6th grade Purim Mishna videos. The web site is: http://6thgrademishna.shutterfly.com/ If you forgot the password send me an email. I will put the Pesach videos on the same website.
In Navi we are now in the last chapters of Shmuel I. Shaul has become very jealous of David and he suspects him of wanting to steal the throne. Yehonatan, Shaul's son, has become David's best friend and he helps protect him from his father. In the last six weeks of school we will read of David's "adventures" as he is on the run from Shaul. He has a difficult challenge ahead of him--he must both protect himself from and honor Shaul.
In Dinim, now that Pesach is over, we will be learning the dinim related to Sefirat HaOmer and that time period. We will also be learning some more halakhot related to Shabbat.
Please do not forget to check SOIN every Sunday for upcoming quizzes and assignments.
